In less than 10 years, the Ontario’s Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) went from an alleged “unfunded liability crisis” threatening the very existence of the workers’ compensation system, to a surplus in which employer premiums have been slashed and corporations gifted billions of dollars.
In a special report for Rankandfile.ca, The WSIB “Surplus: A Political Slush Fund, authors Chris Grawey and Bonnie Heath explore the impact of austerity policies pursued by the Ontario government and WSIB from the 1990s to the present on injured worker’ benefits. These policies, together with changing claims and appeals acceptance rates and other systemic problems at the Board, have created chronic under-compensation for injured workers.
