Opposition parties, following release of the Auditor General report on Veterans Affairs’ handling of disability benefits for veterans with mental health conditions, charged the government with cynicism and failure to uphold its obligations to those injured. The report, which looked at records between Apr. 2006 and Aug. 2014, catalogued delays and bureaucratic barriers faced by those needing mental health support, laying out “in stark terms what veterans have been complaining about for years”. The article notes at the press conference the Auditor General made a point of distinguishing between access to short-term services, which he found acceptable. The problem lay with long-term programs….
