Justice for Injured Workers bike ride / Premier cycleton for June 1st rally

March 22, 2015

Peter PageRichard Hudon on trike Long-time injured worker activists Richard Hudon and Peter Page will set out May 25th on the first Justice for Injured Workers bike ride. Richard was injured over fifty years ago and is well-known, not only for his advocacy and support for  fellow injured workers, but for his marathons on the trike adapted to facilitate his injuries. Peter, whose RSI injury left him unable to work as a millwright in the automotive sector, despite two surgeries, served as Ontario Network of Injured Workers’ Groups (ONIWG) President for many years and continues fight for a fair compensation system, initiating a legal challenge campaign.  The route will take them from Ottawa through the communities of Ingleside, Cornwall, Kingston, Oshawa, Port Hope, Ajax, Pickering – finishing up at Queen’s Park, Toronto on June 1st for the Injured Workers’ Day rally in front of the Legislative Assembly. [download flyer].

Along the way, they’ll be raising awareness of the state of Ontario’s workers’ compensation today, which is increasingly failing injured workers. “When the WSIB denies someone their benefits, lives are shattered. Injured workers are forced onto social assistance and the Canada Pension, downloading the cost of workplace injury and disease off the employers who fund the WSIB and puts them on all the citizens of Ontario. People – mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers – are losing their homes, their families, their dignity, and even their will to live…”

Richard and Peter are asking injured workers to consider supporting  them in this quest – by raising money for ONIWG or helping pay for costs of the trip itself,  by participating in the ride, or coming out to cheer them on.  Donations can be made to ONIWG  c/o R.R.1, Kaministiquia, Ontario, P0T1X0 or fill in a pledge form. For more information or to discuss joining them on the ride, please email Peter at peter_page@hotmail.com or Richard at maitrebras@bell.net.
