Thunder Bay IW Tuesday online info & advocacy session

|

Thunder Bay & District Injured Workers Support Group invites you back to their weekly Tuesday morning Zoom meeting, held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This will be the first of 15 meetings in this 6th session (running to Dec. 22, 2026).

Guest speaker Sean Stan, WSIB Officer and Chair of the Political Action Committee from USW 6500, will focus on occupational disease in Ontario mining, including the Union’s ongoing fight to lower occupational exposure limits for critical mineral workers and increase awareness to this ever growing occupational hazard

“Ontario is fast‑tracking critical mineral development to secure economic independence and support energy transition. Mining contributes $23.8B annually to Ontario’s economy and has grown 79% over two decades. Yet mining also leads all Canadian industries in fatal, preventable occupational disease—primarily from airborne hazards. 87% of mining fatalities in Ontario are caused by occupational disease.”

  • USW Local 6500 has had 55 confirmed occupational disease deaths since 2001
  • Ministry of Labour reports that between 2011 and 2021, 179 deaths were related to occupational disease in Ontario mining.
