The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board has announced major staff reductions (17-20% of its workforce), cutting hundreds of jobs across Ontario and closing nine regional offices. The Board calls this “a difficult business decision, aimed at consolidating work (claims and accounts management functions) that is now largely done remotely.”
But in addition to the alarming impact for Board employees, these cuts and centralization raise important questions for injured workers: waiting times, the quality of decision making, and access to benefits and support that injured workers depend on.
