Traumatic work injury, 8 appeals, still waiting

Richard Owens, a department store manager shot during a robbery in 1996 at his workplace that made headlines at the time, is still fighting to have his claims recognized. These include claims for teeth crushed by the gun butt, a claim denied by the Board who call his damaged teeth a pre-existing condition, and a refusal to pay for psychological counselling despite his diagnosed post-traumatic stress. The article notes that, according to the WSIB’s own statistics, the number of appeals is steadily rising, to nearly 11,400 in 2011 compared to about 8,900 in 2008, while the Board is allowing fewer appeals…

  • Following the article, Richard Owen did publish a 6-part video account (Youtube) of his experience, WSIB and the Injured Worker, with tips for the injured worker, calling for accountability and providing suggestions for improving the WSIB claims process
