Supporting FOI request for WSIB’s McIntyre Powder Project documents

February 27, 2018

In January 2018, the Law Firm of Antony Singleton filed a Freedom of Information request on behalf of Janice Martell with the Ontario WSIB, primarily in regard to WSIB’s negative policy on neurological disorders and occupational aluminum exposure, but also asking for FOI records related to her McIntyre Powder Project work. Although their legal services are provided pro bono, Janice pays for all disbursements – photocopying fees, document fees, postage, medical reports, whatever is needed.

The WSIB has responded that it will cost an estimated $7,967.95 to process the FOI request – although they quickly added that “the Privacy and FOI Office would like to work with you in order to refine or reduce the scope and breadth of your request”. While her lawyers are seeking to waive or reduce these fees, Janice has decided to start a fundraising campaign to raise the money.

Janice pledges that if the campaign raises more money than the FOI request costs, every cent of the balance of monies raised will be used toward her Project work (mostly involving public education and documenting health issues in the affected workers).

I just wanted to make you aware that this is going on. I am not campaigning for funding from organizations, just individuals who wish to contribute as an ally to the fight.”
