Stronger Workplaces for a Stronger Economy Act re-introduced

July 16, 2014

Bill 18 [read text] was given first reading in the Assembly today. The bill reintroduces Bill 146 from the previous session, extending workplace protection to vulnerable workers, including migrant workers.

Schedule 5 of the bill amends the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act in reference to temporary help agencies. It clarifies that under the Board’s experience rating program, injuries of workers hired out will be attributed to the client employer, not the agency which, in the words of the previous Minister of Labour, lessens the incentive to contract out the more dangerous work.
