Minister: “we need to remember why we have a (compensation) plan”

December 11, 2014

“Fully indexed benefits coming for injured workers in Ontario” / Patty Winsa (Toronto Star, Dec. 11, 2014)

Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn tells demonstrators at the Dec. 8 rally that the province will introduce full cost-of-living increases for injured workers receiving partial as well as full benefits. Speakers at the rally outside the Ministry of Labour building addressed concerns about current policies and their impact on injured workers.

Migrant farm worker Winston Morrison, and double amputee Giuseppe Chessari (subject to deeming after his retraining) spoke on their personal experiences and difficulties dealing with the Board. Others detailed the list of WSIB dirty laundry including rebates to companies following death or serious injury and WSIB President David Marshall’s bonus).

“…After his speech, Flynn told reporters that the focus of the board has been on insurance rates and premiums, instead of on people. “I think we need to remember why we have a plan in the first place,” he said. “It’s to protect those people that are truly injured on the job and getting them the benefits that they truly deserve.”.
